🄣 Ingredients You’ll Need

(Family-friendly and simple — no professional baker skills needed)

  • 200g self-raising flour

  • 200g caster sugar

  • 200g unsalted butter (softened)

  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 2 tablespoons milk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • A pinch of salt

For the icing:

  • 100g dark chocolate (melted)

  • 100g icing sugar

  • 50g butter

  • 1 tablespoon milk

Tip:Ā Let your kids help with measuring ingredients — it’s a fun way to sneak in a little maths lesson!

Instructions

1. Preheat & Prepare

Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan). Grease and line two 20cm round cake tins.

2. Mix the Batter

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one by one, mixing after each. Sift in the flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder. Add milk and vanilla, then gently mix until smooth.

Kid Tip:Ā Let them pour or stir - it’s messy, but it’s part of the fun!

3. Bake

Divide the mixture evenly between the two tins. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Let cool completely on a wire rack.

4. Make the Chocolate Icing

Melt chocolate and butter together over low heat.Stir in icing sugar and milk until smooth. Spread icing between the layers and over the top of the cake.

Optional Fun Add-Ons

  • Add sprinkles, berries, or chocolate chips on top for extra fun.

  • Try a marble effect by swirling melted white chocolate through the icing.

  • Make ā€œmini cakesā€ using cupcake tins for smaller hands.

Baking with kids teaches patience, teamwork, and creativity — plus it builds confidence.Let them lick the spoon (supervised!) and talk about each step as you go. It’s messy, sure - but those giggles are priceless.
